Introductory Letter from the IRIA Founders
At IRIA, we are committed to delivering programs and projects that are affordable, cost-effective, accessible, and deeply rooted in the principles of diversity, reciprocity, and local relevance. Drawing on our extensive networks across Africa, we offer participants opportunities for cultural immersion and experiential learning that are unique, memorable, and transformative. These experiences prepare our learners to engage thoughtfully and effectively in diverse cultural and professional contexts.
Our research agenda is driven by a strong commitment to advancing feasible and sustainable innovations that address critical public health challenges in Africa. We intentionally link research with policy and practice, grounding our work in local realities. Central to our mission is the empowerment of lower-level governments to plan, respond, and implement locally driven solutions that reflect the lived experiences of households and communities. We pay close attention to how sexual identity, gender, age, income, and place of residence shape access to healthcare and influence health outcomes.
IRIA’s publications are designed to support frontline healthcare providers and community-level institutions by strengthening local health policy and practice. Our applied research focuses on pressing public health priorities, including malaria, HIV, respiratory infections, maternal and child health, as well as emerging, new, and neglected tropical diseases.
We are proud to offer a distinctive, professional, and deeply fulfilling Global Engagement Program. Through this program, interns collaborate with local medical, clinical, and public-sector multidisciplinary teams to design sustainable solutions to urgent tropical disease challenges. Working in multidisciplinary and multi-country teams allows for meaningful cross-pollination of ideas, the sharing of diverse experiences, and the creation of professional networks that extend far beyond the program and into our graduates’ future careers.
